Quick Answer
You finish the rebuild, install the unit, and the road test shows a flare shift. Now the transmission comes back out for a seal that costs a few dollars. You eat the labor.
That is a comeback you built on the bench. Wet air testing a transmission during assembly is how you find that seal while the drum is still in your hands.
Most shops air test. The difference is when.
Reactive testing happens after the unit is assembled or installed. It tells you something leaks. It rarely tells you where.
Proactive testing happens during assembly. You test each drum and each clutch circuit as you build it, so a failure points at one part.
| Reactive (After Assembly) | Proactive (On The Bench) | |
|---|---|---|
| When You Find The Leak | After assembly or installation | While building each drum and circuit |
| What It Costs | The unit comes back out and apart | One part replaced at the bench |
| What It Tells You | Pressure loss, slip, or harsh engagement | The exact circuit, piston, or ring that leaks |
| How You Confirm The Fix | Reinstall and road test again | Retest the same circuit in seconds |
Fill the circuit with a small amount of ATF, then push that fluid with regulated air.
A clutch circuit needs clearance to work. Dry air finds that clearance and leaks through it, so a healthy circuit can sound like a bad one. Fluid seals normal clearance. What still leaks with fluid in the circuit is a real leak.
Watch for two things. First, the piston strokes and applies the clutch pack. Second, fluid stays where it belongs. ATF bubbling at the piston, the sealing rings, or a neighboring port is pressure loss. You would have found it on the road test.
Wet air testing is a go or no-go check. It has no number attached, so reading it takes experience. Test known good parts and known bad parts until you can tell the difference.
For valve body bores, vacuum testing is the better tool because it gives you a measurement. See Transmission Valve Bodies: Rebuild Or Replace.
Safety first: air and ATF together will spray. Wear eye protection every time.
Set the regulator before you test anything. Never use raw shop air at 90 to 120 PSI. It can damage new seals and throw parts.
Published guidance varies by circuit. Sonnax lists under 30 PSI in one procedure and 30 to 60 PSI in others. Start around 30 PSI and follow the service manual for the unit on your bench.
Put a small amount of clean ATF into the feed port you are testing. Coat the piston lip and the sealing rings.
Seat the rubber tip firmly in the port. Apply air for a few seconds and hold the tip steady.
A leaking new piston usually means installation damage. Check for a rolled or cut lip, a burr in the drum, or a ring that did not seat. Replace the part, then retest the same circuit.

Every clutch circuit has working clearance. Dry air leaks through it, so a good circuit can test bad. Fluid seals that clearance, and only real leaks show.
Use regulated air. Published figures run from under 30 PSI to 60 PSI depending on the circuit. Start around 30 PSI and follow the service manual. Never use unregulated shop air.
Take the drum apart. Look for a lip that rolled or cut during installation, a burr in the drum, or a ring that did not seat. Replace the part and retest.
A cross leak. Pressure meant for one clutch is reaching another circuit, usually past a sealing ring. Fix it before the unit is closed.
The method works on any hydraulic clutch circuit. What changes is where the feed ports are. Use the service manual for the unit to identify each one.
Yes, and it will show check balls that do not seat and badly worn bores. For bore wear, vacuum testing is more accurate because it gives you a number.
The test tells you what the road test cannot. The part fixes it.
