Disassembled ZF 5HP19 valve body and reverse clutch drum on workshop bench for repair

ZF 5HP19 Valve Body: Why A Worn Pressure Regulator Costs You Reverse

Quick Answer

  • The Complaint: A ZF 5HP19 drives forward in every gear but has no reverse. Usually no codes are stored.
  • The Broken Part: The snap ring that retains the reverse clutch has broken out of the aluminum D/G drum.
  • The Real Cause: The ZF 5HP19 valve body. The main pressure regulator valve bore wears, line pressure runs away, and the drum takes the hit.
  • The Fix: Replace the drum and repair the pressure regulator. Use a Sonnax oversized valve (reaming required) or the TransGo 5HP-19-PR kit (no reaming).

A BMW, Audi, or Volkswagen comes in moving forward fine and doing nothing in reverse. On a ZF 5HP19, that complaint has a well-known ending: a broken reverse drum.

The drum is what failed. It is not why it failed. The cause sits in the ZF 5HP19 valve body. Replace the drum and leave the valve body alone, and you have built a comeback.

Diagnose first. Then source the right parts.

Why The ZF 5HP19 Valve Body Breaks The Reverse Drum

The 5HP19 uses the D brake to hold the planetary member needed for reverse. The D clutch pack sits in an aluminum drum, which ZF calls cylinder D/G. A snap ring retains the pack.

The failure runs in three steps:

  1. Bore Wear. The main pressure regulator valve wears its bore in the lower front valve body. The wear is usually in the bore, not on the valve. A valve that looks perfect tells you nothing.
  2. Runaway Pressure. With the bore worn, the valve stops regulating. Line pressure turns erratic and climbs past what the drum was built to hold.
  3. Drum Failure. Every reverse engagement loads the snap ring against its groove. Under excess pressure the aluminum fatigues, and the snap ring breaks out of the drum.

Once the snap ring lets go, the D clutch has apply loss it cannot recover from. Reverse is gone.

The same worn bore also causes erratic line pressure, hard shifts, kick-down bang, and delayed engagement in reverse. If the car had those complaints before it lost reverse, the valve body was already telling you.

For background on how valve body wear shows up, see Operation And Main Failures Of The Transmission Valve Body.

Confirm It Before You Pull The Transmission

Start with the basics before condemning major components.

  1. Check For Codes. A broken D/G drum usually sets none. No reverse with no codes is the typical presentation.
  2. Rule Out An Electrical Command Problem. Unplug the solenoid connector at the transmission to force failsafe mode. If reverse comes back, check the range selector switch. If reverse is still gone, the failure is inside the unit.
  3. Drop The Pan. Look for curved aluminum fragments, pieces of snap ring, and fine aluminum silt on the magnet and pan floor. Drum fragments in the pan settle the question.

Not every no-reverse complaint is a drum. For the general checklist across all units, see Reasons Why Your Car Won't Go In Reverse.

Identify Your Valve Body Before You Order

The pressure regulator repair depends on which valve body is in the unit. There are two.

Valve Body Pressure Regulator Valve Speed Sensor Location Found In
Early (E17) 4 spools On the valve body Audi and Volkswagen only
Late (E18.2) 5 spools On the transmission case Audi, Volkswagen, and BMW

Every BMW unit has the late valve body. Audi and Volkswagen units can have either, so look before you order.

Repair The Pressure Regulator

You have two ways to do it.

Option A: Sonnax Oversized Pressure Regulator Valve

Ream the worn bore and install an oversized valve. This restores the valve-to-bore clearance and salvages the casting.

  • Sonnax 85755-01 fits the early (E17) valve body.
  • Sonnax 85755-02 fits the late (E18.2) valve body.

Reaming requires the Sonnax tool kit and fixture. Vacuum test the bore first. The decision should rest on a number, not on a visual check.

Option B: TransGo 5HP-19-PR

The TransGo 5HP-19-PR kit needs no reaming and no special tools. It can be installed with the transmission still in the vehicle.

It fits the 5-land style pressure regulator valve only. That is the late valve body. It does not fit the early 4-spool unit.

Which One

  • Transmission is already on the bench and you own the reamer: Sonnax.
  • Valve body repair in the vehicle, or no reamer in the shop: TransGo.
  • Early Audi or Volkswagen valve body: Sonnax 85755-01 is the option.

While the valve body is off, replace the solenoid O-rings and clean every passage of converter debris and clutch material.

Still deciding whether the casting is worth saving? See Transmission Valve Bodies: Rebuild Or Replace.

Replace The D/G Drum

The drum cannot be repaired. It has to be replaced, and the transmission has to come out to do it.

Teardown Order

  1. Remove the torque converter, oil pan, and valve body.
  2. Remove the oil supply, which is the pump with brake C.
  3. Remove the input assembly, which holds clutches A, B, and E.
  4. Remove the tower. The D/G drum is part of the tower, along with the planetary drive and clutch F.

Inspect the D clutch frictions and steels for glazing and heat distortion. Replace the D/G piston seals and O-rings. Set D and G clutch clearance with the selective snap rings.

The Drum Is Not One Part

ZF lists five different D/G drums for the 5HP19 family. They do not interchange. Order by the ZF number on the transmission type plate, not by the make of the car.

ZF Drum Part Number Version Type Plate Ends In
1056 373 032 ZF5HP19 (BMW) 005, 009, 010
1056 373 033 ZF5HP19 (BMW) 008
1060 373 002 ZF5HP19FL / FLA / HL 005, 006, 009, 011, 021, 027, 030, 031, 050, 053
1060 373 003 ZF5HP19FL / FLA 013, 049, 072
1060 373 014 ZF5HP19FL / FLA 059, 088

BMW type plates read 1060 000 followed by three digits. Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche plates read 1060 030 followed by three digits. The table covers North American units.

Use the current updated-design drum. It has a thicker casting, an improved radius, and the snap ring groove moved further from the edge.

Torque Specs And Fluid Fill

These values are from the ZF 5HP19 repair manual for the rear-wheel-drive unit. FL and FLA units differ, so check the manual for your version.

Fastener Torque Notes
D/G Drum (Tower) Screws, TX50 63 Nm Three screws, tightened in three stages. See below
Pump Screws, TX27 10 Nm Follow the ZF sequence. Screw 1 is 6 Nm
Valve Body To Case Screws, TX27 8 Nm
Oil Pan Screws, TX27 10 Nm Replace the pan gasket
Oil Pan Drain Plug 30 Nm
Fill Plug 35 Nm

D/G drum screw sequence: center screw to 30 Nm and the two outer screws to 15 Nm. Then center to 63 Nm and outers to 30 Nm. Then outers to 63 Nm.

Fluid: ATF meeting ZF LifeguardFluid 5 (ESSO LT 71141).

Level check: engine idling. Open the fill plug with the fluid at 30–35°C (86–95°F). Have the plug back in by 40°C (104°F). Fluid must not exceed 50°C (122°F) during the check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Drive A ZF 5HP19 With No Reverse?

It will move forward, but do not keep driving it. Fragments of the drum and snap ring travel with the fluid. They contaminate solenoids, score the pump, and damage the forward clutch packs. A drum job becomes a full overhaul.

Can The ZF 5HP19 Valve Body Be Repaired In The Vehicle?

Yes. The valve body comes out through the pan, and the TransGo 5HP-19-PR kit installs with no reaming. The drum is different. Replacing it requires removing the transmission.

How Do I Know Which ZF 5HP19 Valve Body I Have?

Count the spools on the pressure regulator valve and find the speed sensor. Four spools with the sensor on the valve body is the early (E17) unit. Five spools with the sensor on the case is the late (E18.2) unit. All BMW units are late.

Are The BMW And Audi Reverse Drums The Same?

No. ZF uses different drum part numbers for the BMW unit and for the Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche units, and they do not interchange. Order by the type plate number.

What Fluid Does The ZF 5HP19 Use?

ATF that meets ZF LifeguardFluid 5, also listed as ESSO LT 71141. Do not use a multi-vehicle fluid that does not carry that specification.

What Is In A ZF 5HP19 Rebuild Kit?

An overhaul kit covers the gaskets, seals, and O-rings. Frictions and steels are separate packs. The pressure regulator valve is never part of a rebuild kit, so order it on its own.
